Mercator to present report on minority media at FUEN Congress, Pecs

The Federal Union of European Nationalities (FUEN) have designated 2008 the year in which they will focus on the “Fundamental Right to Media”. As part of this the Mercator Institute for Media, Languages and Culture have written a report on the current state of minority media in Europe. This will encompass an overview of the media situation and the judicial and civil rights foundations for the fundamental right to media in ones own language. It will also give recommendations for future developments and actions in order to further minority media in Europe.

The 53rd FUEN Congress will be held in Pécs, Hungary from the 22-25th May 2008. Full details can be found here.

Catalan media moves on apace with new web-only radio station and a broadcast agreement in Sardinia

The Catalan audiovisual media corporation CCMA continues to build on its reputation as being at the vanguard of minority language media. In February it launched its first web-only radio station – CatClàssica – which broadcasts 24 hours a day. This adds to their already impressive range of public radio programming through Radio Catalunya.

The corporation also announced in April that it had signed an agreement with Alguer Television in Sardinia in order that the main television channel TV3 can be viewed in the Catalan speaking enclave of Alguer.

5 companies bid for Welsh press funding
Five tenders have been submitted to the Welsh Books Council who shall distribute the funding of £200,000 (€250,000) a year for 3 years towards the development of the Welsh language press. This sum is seen by many commentators as insufficient to produce a daily newspaper as was initially hoped.

The five companies include a bid from Dyddiol Cyf, the company that has been working towards establishing a Welsh language daily for many years, alongside a bid from Golwg, a Welsh language weekly news magazine. Other bids include two bids from Trinity Mirror who run two English language dailies in Wales, and a bid from Y Cwmni Newyddion (The News Company) which is comprised of several ex-BBC journalists.

A decision will be made on the funding at the end of May, with work expected to commence on the new publication/website immediately.

Cynhadledd Cyfrwng – 3 diwrnod i fynd!

27/4/2008

cyfrwngErs rhai misoedd bellach mae rhai o staff Mercator wedi bod yn gweithio ar ffurfio rhaglen Cynhadledd Cyfrwng 2008. Teitl y gynhadledd yw “Cydgyfeiriant :: Llwyfannau Newydd” ac rydym yn edrych mlaen yn arw i glywed rhai o banelwyr a siaradwyr y gynhadledd.

Yno hefyd bydd gwobr flynyddol Cyfrwng yn cael ei rhoi i Owen Edwards am ei gyfraniad enfawr i’r cyfryngau yng Nghymru. Gellir gweld erthyglau am hyn drwy ddilyn y dolenni isod.

Gallwch lawrlwytho’r rhaglen oddi ar wefan Cyfrwng.

Mercator staff have recently been working on preparing the way for this year’s Cyfrwng conference which is hosted by the Department of Theatre, Film and Television Studies at Aberystwyth University. The theme this year is “Convergence :: New Platforms”, and it will take place at the National Library of Wales. The location, although perhaps conjuring images of books and dust, is ideally suited to the task with it’s technologically adept Drwm auditorium.

The Cyfrwng award this year will be presented to Owen Edwards, the first chief executive of S4C.
